1) Antonio del, eigentlich A. di Jacopo d'Antonio Benci ['bentʃi], italienischer Bronzebildner, Goldschmied, Gießer, Maler und Stecher, * Florenz 17. 1. 1432, ✝ Rom 4. 2. 1498; war zunächst als Goldschmied tätig (nach Lehre in der väterlichen Werkstatt), ab etwa 1460 auch als Maler. Vielleicht Schüler von Andrea del Castagno; 1469 Reise nach Spoleto und Rom. Der gebrochene scharfe Faltenstil Pollaiuolos und seines Bruders Piero steht im Rahmen der Florentiner Stilentwicklung in der Malerei des späteren 15. Jahrhunderts und hat Parallelen nördlich der Alpen (M. Schongauer). Die Darstellung der im Raum bewegten, vielansichtigen Figur ist Pollaiuolos Beitrag zur Skulptur der Renaissance, zunächst in der Kleinplastik (Kleinbronze »Herakles den Antaios erwürgend«, um 1475; Florenz, Bargello); die Vielansichtigkeit charakterisiert auch seine Malerei und Grafik. Ab 1466 führte er mit Piero Fresken aus, u. a. Engel und Heilige für eine Kapelle in San Miniato al Monte (zum Teil am Ort, zum Teil in den Uffizien); fünf nackte Tänzer (Villa della Gallina bei Florenz); sechs Tugenden (heute Uffizien). Sein Kupferstich »Kampf der nackten Männer« (um 1470/1475) war wegweisend für die Aktdarstellung. In seinen Profilporträts (Porträt einer vornehmen jungen Frau, um 1465; Mailand, Museo Poldi Pezzoli) zeigt er sich von Domenico Veneziano und Piero della Francesca beeinflusst. - Pollaiuolos Bruder Piero (* 1443, ✝ 1496) arbeitete mit ihm in Werkstattgemeinschaft als Maler; eigenständig die Marienkrönung in Sant'Agostino in San Gimignano (1483) und die Prudentia unter den sechs Tugenden.
